Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a neurological condition that is challenging to diagnose and poorly understood. CRPS is a chronic pain disorder that can significantly impact daily activities, mental well-being, and lead to disability. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, CRPS is characterized by persistent or heightened pain, changes in skin color or temperature, and swelling in the affected area.
CRPS, ranked as one of the most severe chronic pains by the McGill Pain Index, affects the limbs and can be more debilitating than childbirth or amputation. There are two types of CRPS: Type 1, which is more common and may not show obvious signs of nerve damage, and Type 2, which is often associated with nerve damage.
